Backrooms
2026 110mins (NC16) Thriller/Suspense
Directed by Kane Parsons Starring Renate Reinsve, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Duplass

If you’ve spent any time on the weirder corners of the internet, you’ve probably heard of the "liminal space" Backrooms phenomenon. For the film adaptation, A24 handed the keys to 20 year old YouTube prodigy Kane Parsons, and he delivered an indie hit that is currently leveling the US box office with a genre piece that skips cheap gimmicks in favor of high art psychological horror.

Struggling furniture store owner Clark discovers a bizarre, glowing doorway in his basement that leads directly into the Backrooms—a seemingly infinite, yellow-walled maze that defies all laws of physics. When Clark vanishes into this reality-bending labyrinth, his therapist, Mary, goes in looking for him, only to get trapped in the exact same surreal, mind-warping nightmare.

The film features brief portraits of the group, including an Israeli ex-air force captain, an Algerian journalist, a Swedish singer and a Malaysian academic. Queer as Punk
2025 88mins (R21) Documentary
Directed by Yihwen Chen

Being LGBT is criminalised in Muslim-majority Malaysia. A story close to home, QUEER AS PUNK shows Faris, a transman, and his punk band “Shh… Diam!” as they use their music to carve out spaces to exist in Malaysia, while challenging conservative traditions.

Is it possible to change the world while headbanging and singing about shower makeouts? Is it possible to change the world WITHOUT headbanging and singing about just wanting to chill, but not being able to cuz yer broke?!? Serious question.

The punk revolutionary spirit burns bright against systemic transphobia, and paints a vivid picture of Singapore-Malaysian queer history, all to the tune of the band @shhdiam’s irreverent tunes, which pulses through the docu like a kick drum. Released in 2025, this is your chance to get tapped in!!!

Gerry, an underpaid academic, and Ilaria, a traffic warden, pack up their lives with their teenage son and swap their cramped city flat for a crumbling farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. Obsession
2026 108mins (M18) Horror
Directed by Curry Barker Starring Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson

Every now and then, a genre film arrives out of nowhere to completely rewrite the theatrical rulebook, and this year, that lightning strike is Curry Barker’s Obsession.

The story kicks off when hopeless romantic Bear uses a eerie "One Wish Willow" to make his long time crush, Nikki, fall for him. It works, but with a massive catch: her newfound "love" instantly mutates into a blood soaked, obsessive situationship.

Produced on a shoestring budget of under a million dollars, this relentless piece of supernatural terror has exploded into an absolute box office success in the US. At the center of the madness is breakout star Inde Navarrette, delivering an incredibly unhinged and nuanced performance, cleverly using the horror framework to look at deeper anxieties surrounding control, consent, and women's bodily autonomy. Judging by the squirming and collective nervous laughter from our team during our preview screening, you are going to want to witness this instant cult classic in a packed theater full of gasping, screaming filmhomies.

In the world’s happiest town, a man haunted by his past uncovers a sinister sacrifice behind its veneer of bliss.

Sergio enters Remis, a town famed for being the happiest in the world, only to find himself at odds with its pristine facade. Within this manufactured paradise, he is initiated into a startling ritual: a boy named Matteo liberates the residents from suffering through a simple hug. What begins as a search for truth quickly curdles into horror as Sergio unveils the disturbing reality sustaining the town’s superficial happiness.

Reminiscent of Ari Aster’s Hereditary and Jordan Peele’s Get Out, La Valle Dei Sorrisi (The Holy Boy) probes the cost of healing at another’s expense– confronting a reality where suffering is not a choice, but a prerequisite for truth over the comfort of false optimism. Brokeback Mountain x Proud Spaces
2005 134mins (R21) Drama
Directed by Ang Lee Starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams

Join us for a special screening of Brokeback Mountain presented by Proud Spaces and NBCUniversal as part of Pink Screen, a Signature Event of Pink Fest. All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting Proud Spaces and their ongoing work with the LGBTQ+ community.

For one night only, we’re transforming the screening into a queer rodeo: think denim, fringe, desire, and everything in between. Come dressed for the occasion and join us for an evening of cinema, conversation, and community.

Following the screening, we are exploring an intergenerational panel conversation on queer cinema, representation, and the cultural impact of Brokeback Mountain over the past two decades. Bringing together a queer activist who watched the film when it was first released, a younger viewer encountering it for the first time, and a filmmaker working within the local landscape today, the discussion will reflect on how queer stories have evolved onscreen, and what still feels unresolved. Are there differing thresholds applied to “foreign” versus local works that engage sensitive social issues? How do we tell stories that are deeply rooted in lived realities here?

Tickets are available on a sliding scale at $25, $50, and $75. Guests purchasing $50 and $75 tickets will also receive popcorn and soda vouchers redeemable at the Filmhouse concession stand.

Cactus Pears
2025 114mins (R21) Drama
Directed by Rohan Kanawade Starring Bhushaan Manoj, Suraaj Suman, Jayshri Jagtap

When his beloved father dies, 30-year-old Anand is compelled by family to leave Mumbai for 10 days of mourning rites in rural western India. He finds reprieve from family pressures in the companionship of a local farmer, and they develop a tender intimacy. As the mourning rituals taper and Mumbai calls for his return, the fate of his relationship becomes uncertain.

CACTUS PEARS was the first Marathi-language film to premiere at Sundance, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. Rated at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, this feature directorial debut by Rohan Parashuram Kanawade renders the realities of lower-class queer life in India with exquisite care, intending to challenge the misconception that queer experiences are limited to the upper class.

The western Indian countryside sings in place of a background score, with a crisp and layered soundscape designed from on-set field recordings. Combined with the still, painterly frames, an almost transcendent quality arises, evoking a mix of dreaminess, tropical sluggishness, cotton-mouthed desire, and warm grief.
